  2. What is Closed Loop Thermal Control?

Thermal systems are integral to myriad processes that drive industries of all types, from semiconductor processing and energy generation to medical and foodservice equipment and beyond. Found within each of these industries are sensitive processes that require varying levels of temperature regulation. For instance, when a manufacturing process molds and shapes metal, equipment needs to maintain a temperature above a certain threshold, but an exact temperature may not be necessary. However, another process that involves melting plastic may need to reach a certain temperature but not exceed it—or the material will start to burn.

In those situations for which precise temperature control is required, closed loop systems offer the ability to closely monitor and compensate for environmental changes.

Closed loop temperature control incorporates sensors and ongoing feedback to the system to continually regulate temperature based

  4. UL Approved X-Ray Cooling Systems from ATC

    UL Approved X-Ray Cooling Systems

The cooling of X-Ray equipment is crucial, especially when it’s part of a highly advanced three-dimensional imaging system. When Thermal Exchange Ltd, now part of Applied Thermal Control, was approached by a renowned manufacturer of X-ray inspection equipment to provide a bespoke x-ray cooling cooling solution, they immediately set about establishing their requirements and were soon designing the initial prototypes.

The first challenge was to provide a machine with sufficient cooling capacity in the available size envelope. Cooling power vs. size ratio however wasn’t the only problem; the customer also required a computer interface capable of monitoring an array of system conditions in order to protect their valuable equipment, and, inverter drive technology had to be employed to handle the variable load conditions of the fluid circuit. This all required considerable engineering and a great deal of computer modelling before an acceptable design

  6. Do I Need a Point of Use Chiller?

House water does the heavy lifting for many cooling applications throughout industrial and semiconductor fab manufacturing facilities; but there are a wide range of applications that require or benefit from a 'point of use' or 'process' temperature control unit.

Advantages of using chillers for process cooling include:

    • The ability to operate across a range of ambient conditions at variable loads, from -20C to +70C
    • The ability to maintain constant and precise control of the process temperature, to +/- 1° degree C
    • The cooling fluid is delivered directly to the application heat source
    • Cooling is independent of the ambient conditions
    • The ability to minimize potential contamination of the process by using a closed-loop water circuit
    • Reduced waste and cost of utility water
    • High heat exchange capacity

  7. What is TPO and Why is it Performed?

Temperature Programmed Oxidation (TPO) is an analytical technique capable of characterizing catalysts and is an important consideration for research and development.

The performance of TPO requires a furnace or microreactor capable of increasing temperatures of a catalyst in precise increments up to extreme conditions, for example in brackets of 1-20°C min-1 up to 1000°C. An integrated mass spectrometer allows for constant real-time analysis of catalytic activity throughout a given thermal reaction, in which a gas mixture will flow over a catalyst throughout an incrementally programmed temperature rise.

  8. What is TPR and How is it Performed?

Temperature programmed reduction (TPR) is a material characterization process commonly used in catalysis studies to examine the surface chemistry of metals and metal oxides under varying thermal conditions. TPR-enabled mass spectrometry equipment can acquire quantitative and qualitative data relating to the reducing gas mixtures that are made to flow over metallic samples. This process is integral to catalyst investigation as it provides accurate insights into catalyst reducibility and reaction rates in the presence of metal surfaces, informing conclusions on catalyst reproducibility and supporting quality control of existing catalytic substances by setting benchmarks or reduction profiles that ideal manufactured catalysts should adhere to.

  10. Closed Loop Temperature Control: a Basic Electric Oven Retrofit

To create a Closed Loop Temperature Control circuit you need at least 4 things, usually 5:

    1) Heater
    2) Power Switch
    3) Controller
    4) Sensor
    5) Limit Controller with additional sensor (optional but highly recommended)

Heater: This already exists in your oven or furnace. Determine the power (voltage, wattage, amperage) and number of phases. If it is three phase, determine if you need to switch two legs or three, which can be noted by  the number of fuses on the main power leading to the heater(s) in your current configuration (see related post).

Power Switch: From this power and heater info you can select the power
